RT-PCR Based on 5'UTR Superior in Detecting GBV-C/HGV

A reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique based on a 5' untranslated region appears to be the most sensitive assay for detection of GB Virus-C/hepatitis G virus, according to a multicenter report.

GBV-C/HGV has a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome of approximately 9.4 kb. It is a member of the Flaviviridae, and thus closely related to HCV phylogenetically. Its genomic organization is also similar to HCV with a 5' untranslated region (UTR), a single open reading frame with the structural proteins on the 5' end and nonstructural (NS) proteins at the 3' end, and a 3'UTR.
