According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th Annual Meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association, held May 11-14, 1997, in Washington, DC, "Background: Interferon (IFN) therapy for chronic hepatitis type C makes HCV-RNA in serum eliminate, resulting in prevention of development to liver cirrhosis. However it was unknown whether IFN therapy inhibited the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after cessation of therapy or not.
