ELISA Screening Over-Estimates Infection

Only a small number of blood donors from the Western Cape, South Africa, with serology findings that suggested hepatitis C virus infection had detectable viremia.

T.J. Tucker, University of Cape Town, South Africa, and colleagues compared risk factors and clinical and biochemical features of viremic and non-viremic blood donors to determine the true incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Western Cape volunteer blood donors ("Hepatitis C Virus Infection Rate in Volunteer Blood Donors from the Western Cape - Comparison of Screening Tests and PCR," South African Medical Journal [SAMJ], 1997;87:603-605).
