Hepatitis C Virus Found in Tears

Tears may transmit hepatitis C virus infection, according to a report from France.

Researcher Isabelle Mendel and colleagues found, however, that the source of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in tear fluid still needs to be clarified.

HCV is mainly transmitted by the parenteral route, but there appears to be no identifiable source of infection in approximately 50 percent of patients with HCV infection. It has been suggested by various researchers that the virus may be transmitted via body fluids (Fried et al., Gastroenterology 1992;102:1306-1308; Liou et al., J Med Virol, 1992;37:197-202), but few studies have shown the presence of HCV RNA in tear...
