IFN Could Be Harmful in Dually Infected

Interferon therapy is of limited value in patients with dual hepatitis B and C virus infection and could actually induce severe hepatitis in this group, according to a report from Taiwan.

Researcher Yun-Fan Liaw and colleagues suggested that interferon therapy could be harmful when it facilitates clearance of one virus, thereby removing its suppressive effect on the emergence of the other ("Response of Patients with Dual Hepatitis B Virus and C Virus Infection to Interferon Therapy," Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research, September 1997;17:449-452).
