Researcher Yun-Fan Liaw and colleagues suggested that interferon therapy could be harmful when it facilitates clearance of one virus, thereby removing its suppressive effect on the emergence of the other ("Response of Patients with Dual Hepatitis B Virus and C Virus Infection to Interferon Therapy," Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research, September 1997;17:449-452).
