Famvir Receives FDA Clearance for Recurrent Genital Herpes Suppression

SmithKline Beecham, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, announced that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market Famvir (famciclovir) for suppression of recurrent genital herpes.

While Famvir has been widely used to treat genital herpes outbreaks, patients can now take Famvir daily to help prevent outbreaks. This indication was based on two double-blind, one-year placebo-controlled studies which showed that patients receiving Famvir 250 mg twice daily had approximately 80 percent fewer recurrences.
