"A Novel, High-Throughput Assay System for the Hepatitis C Virus NS3 Serine Proteinase in COS Cells."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 4th International Meeting on Hepatitis C Virus and Related Viruses, Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis, held March 6-10, 1997, in Kyoto, Japan, "The polyprotein encoded by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is processed by host- and virus-encoded proteinases into mature proteins. A serine proteinase activity in the N-terminal one-third of the NS3 protein is responsible for processing at four cleavage sites in the nonstructural region. The NS4A protein forms a stable complex with the NS3 proteinase domain and is a cofactor required for these cleavage events.
