Hong Kong Fears Hepatitis A from China

Doctors fear a hepatitis epidemic in Hong Kong in 1998 arising from cross-border travel into China, a newspaper said.

Medical experts from Hong Kong and China launched a joint research center in Guangdong to fight hepatitis A, fearing up to 20,000 people might get infected in Hong Kong.

The disease, which causes nausea, jaundice, and fatigue, is spread through unsanitary conditions such as dirty food and water.

Residents of this city of 6.5 million people make more than 50 million trips to Guangdong each year.
