Hepatitis A Vaccines

Two New HAV Vaccines Available

Pharmaceutical companies Merck and Co. and SmithKline Beecham each have developed and now are marketing an inactivated hepatitis A vaccine.

According to an article in Obstetrics and Gynecology, both vaccines provide at-risk people over the age of two long-term protection against hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection (Duff and Duff, "Hepatitis A Vaccine: Ready for Prime Time," Obstet Gynecol, March 1998;91(3):468-471). Seroconversion rates exceed 95 percent.

The Merck vaccine goes by the brand name Vaqta. Administered intramuscularly, adults are recommended to receive 1.0 mL (50 U HAV antigen) and then a booster shot six to 12 months later; children...
