IFN Shouldn't Be Given Routinely to HCV RNA Carriers with Normal ALT

Hepatitis C virus RNA carriers with normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels should not be routinely treated with interferon, according to a report from Italy.

"The findings of this pilot study indicate that long-term treatment with low doses of interferon does not lead to eradication or suppression of serum HCV RNA in HCV carriers with persistently normal ALT values," Angelo Sangiovanni and colleagues wrote ("Interferon Alpha Treatment of HCV RNA Carriers with Persistently Normal Transaminase Levels: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Study," Hepatology, March 1998;27(3):853-856).
