Threefold Increase in Hepatitis Cases Reported

There has been a threefold increase in the number of hepatitis cases in Shawnee County, Kansas, but the cause is uncertain, the county health department said.

The Shawnee County Health Agency has documented 14 cases of hepatitis A thus far in 1998.

Dr. Larry Rumans, interim health officer with the health agency, said four cases of hepatitis A were reported in 1997, and only three were reported in 1996.

About half the cases in 1998 have occurred within families where there is more than one infected person, Rumans said, but the rest have been sporadic.
