High Rate of Interspousal HCV Transmission in Egypt

Interspousal transmission of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) was found to be highly prevalent in a study conducted in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

The finding contradicts those of earlier studies which reported rates of sexual transmission of HCV between spouses to be as low as 1 percent.

Dr. Rachana M. Kumar, United Arab Emirates University, determined the incidence of anti-HCV antibodies in 442 family members of 65 pregnant, Egyptian women who were anti-HCV positive and asymptomatic for the disease and of a control group of 65 pregnant women who were negative for anti-HCV antibodies.
