CDC Upscales Efforts Against Sexually Transmitted Diseases

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is initiating an education project in an effort to curtail the increasing incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the U.S.

Between 10 million and 12 million new cases of STDs are reported each year in the U.S., at a cost of at least $10 billion annually, according to the U.S. Institute of Medicine. But many local health departments don't provide treatment for these diseases, said a recent Cable News Network (CNN) article ("CDC Tackles Surge in Sexual Diseases," CNN Interactive Online March 24, 1998).
