"Surveillance for Acute Liver Failure: A Pilot Study."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, held March 8-11, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, "Introduction: The incidence and causes of acute liver failure (ALF) in the United States are not well defined. Among patients with ALF, the cause cannot be determined in the majority of patients, making 'unknown etiology' the most common classification. Methods: As a pilot study for a more extensive surveillance system for ALF, we prospectively collected data on patients admitted to two university hospitals with the diagnosis of ALF (prothrombin time >2 SD above normal and hepatic encephalopathy).
