According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, held March 8-11, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, "Introduction: The incidence and causes of acute liver failure (ALF) in the United States are not well defined. Among patients with ALF, the cause cannot be determined in the majority of patients, making 'unknown etiology' the most common classification.
