Anti-HBc Does Not Preclude Hepatitis B Vaccination

People with antibody to hepatitis B core antigen may still benefit from vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Researchers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health Hepatitis Studies Section found that having antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) is not an accurate single marker of HBV infection.

"When a person who is screened for hepatitis B vaccination by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is found to have isolated anti-HBc in their serum, the most practical approach would be to offer the person the hepatitis B vaccine and evaluate their response to vaccination," A.
