Neonatal HGV Infection is Usually Persistent

Hepatitis G virus infection in early infancy is usually maternally-acquired and persistent, but is rarely associated with active hepatitis, according to a report from Taiwan.

"Although we have demonstrated maternal transmission of GBV-C/HGV, whether this occurs vertically or perinatally cannot be determined in our study, because the first serum samples were taken at age {{>=}} 3 months," Ho-Hsiung Lin and colleagues wrote ("Mother-to-Infant Transmission of GB Virus C/Hepatitis G Virus: The Role of High-Titered Maternal Viremia and Mode of Delivery," Journal of Infectious Diseases, May 1998;177:1202-1206).
