"An Observational Cohort Study of Hepatitis E in Pregnancy."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, held March 8-11, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, "Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a recently identified cause of enteric hepatitis, is the major cause of hospitalized jaundice in much of the developing world. A unique and identifying feature of hepatitis E is a case fatality rate among pregnant women of 10-25% as determined in hospital case series and outbreak investigations. To define its broader impact and to highlight populations for possible immunization, this study was performed in Katmandu, Nepal, an area endemic for hepatitis E.
