According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Cancer Symposium, jointly sponsored by Society of Surgical Oncology and the World Federation of Surgical Oncology Societies, held March 26-29, 1998, in San Diego, California, "Worldwide, the majority of cases of hepatocellular cancer (HCC) arise in individuals with chronic hepatitis B or C virus infections. Early detection of HCC in these patients provides the best chance for curative treatment, but serum AFP levels are frequently normal in patients with small HCCs.
