TNF May Have Role in HCV Pathogenesis

Tumor necrosis factor may play a role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus, according to a report from the University of Southern California School of Medicine.

"(Our) results indicate an intriguing role for the viral core protein in induction of cell death during hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection through tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathway," Nongliao Zhu and colleagues wrote ("Hepatitis C Virus Core Protein Binds to the Cytoplasmic Domain of Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor 1 and Enhances TNF-Induced Apoptosis," Journal of Virology, May 1998;72(5):3691-3697).
