Published in Hepatitis Weekly, June 22nd, 1998

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 2nd Congress of Molecular Medicine, held May 6-9, 1998, at the International Congress Center, Berlin, Germany, "Nuclear transport of viral genomes may be a model for therapeutic gene transfer. Here, we analyzed the components that facilitate the nuclear transport of HBV DNA and study the regulation of this process. HBV contains a DNA genome but replicates by reverse transcription of an RNA intermediate. This RNA intermediate is transcribed within hepatocyte nuclei from a viral covalently closed DNA (cccDNA).
