Interferon Has Some Activity in Children with HCV Infection

Interferon alpha offers some efficacy in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection in children, according to a report from Massachusetts.

Researcher Maureen M. Jonas and colleagues from Boston's Children's Hospital found, however, that half the children in their study treated with interferon alpha (INF-(alpha)) experienced weight-loss as a result of therapy.

"The children were offered nutritional supplements when weight loss was more than 5 percent of baseline body weight," Jonas et al. wrote ("Interferon-Alpha Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Children," Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 1998;17:241-246).
