Time-Limited Exclusion for Cocaine Use Would Result in Sizeable Blood Donor Loss

Asking volunteer blood donors about a lifetime history of intranasal cocaine use during predonation screening could result in dishonest answers - or substantial donor loss.

To determine whether the predonation screening of blood donors should contain a question about intranasal cocaine use and whether the addition of such a question would lead to unacceptable donor loss, National Institutes of Health researcher Cathy Conry-Cantilena and colleagues administered a survey on the prevalence of intranasal drug use among volunteer blood donors.
