Pre-Transplant Markers Do Not Predict Later Immunoprophylaxis Requirements

Results of an attempt to correlate pre-transplant markers for hepatitis B virus (HBV) with post-transplant immunoprophylaxis requirements in infected patients with end-stage liver disease suggest that another approach to this goal may be warranted.

University of Virginia researchers, reporting in the Annals of Surgery, found measuring levels of pre-transplant markers "was an overall poor predictor of HBIg [hepatitis B immunoglobulin] requirements after the transplant" (Sawyer et al., "Improved Clinical Outcomes with Liver Transplantation for Hepatitis B-Induced Chronic Liver Failure Using Passive Immunization," Ann Surg, June 1998;227(6):841-850).
