HIV Associated with Cirrhosis in HCV Coinfected Patients

HIV is independently associated with cirrhosis in patients who are coinfected with hepatitis C virus, according to a report from France.

The report was presented by A. Landau and colleagues from the Hopital Pasteur, Paris at the 49th annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, held November 6-10, 1998, in Chicago, Illinois.

The researchers studied intravenous drug users to assess the effect of HIV on hepatitis C virus (HCV) clinical and histological course. In addition, they examined the role of alcohol in HIV/HCV coinfected people.
