Hepatitis E Isolated in Barcelona Sewers

Researchers in Barcelona, Spain have isolated a strain of infectious hepatitis E from sewage.

This finding is of great concern, researcher S. Pina and colleagues noted, because hepatitis E is not endemic in this area.

Raw sewage samples from Barcelona were analyzed by reverse transcriptase-PCR followed by nested PCR ("Characterization of a Strain of Infectious Hepatitis E Virus Isolated from Sewage in an Area Where Hepatitis E is Not Endemic," Applied Environmental Microbiology, November 1998;64(11):4485-4488).
