Tennessee To Go Ahead with Mandatory Hepatitis B Vaccine

The state of Tennessee is moving ahead with plans to require children to be immunized against the hepatitis B virus (HBV) before entering kindergarten in Fall 1998, even though the vaccine has been linked to other health problems.

State health officials said the vaccine can prevent the spread of the hepatitis B virus that infects some 200,000 U.S. residents each year. And it can help people avoid life-threatening complications including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

But parents in New Hampshire and Wyoming have protested mandatory immunization programs in their states because some studies have suggested a connection between the vaccine and diseases...
