Vaccination Best Way to Prevent HBV in IVDUs

Vaccination against hepatitis B is the best way to prevent the virus among intravenous drug users, according to a report from the United Kingdom.

Researcher K.H. Lamden and colleagues sought to identify the risk factors for hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) virus infections in drug users attending two drug treatment centers in Northwest England, and to evaluate the effect of both needle exchange and hepatitis B vaccination on the prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections ("Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Virus Infections: Risk Factors Among Drug Users in Northwest England," Journal of Infection, November 1998;37(3):260-269).
