Fatal Coxsackievirus Often Due to Fulminant Hepatitis

Fatal coxsackievirus B infection in newborns tends to occur due to fulminant hepatitis, according to a report from Taiwan.

Researcher S.M. Wang and colleagues sought to clarify the major features of fatal coxsackievirus B infection characterized by fulminant hepatitis in early infancy.

Clinical manifestations and laboratory investigations concerning five consecutive young infants with overwhelming coxsackievirus B fulminant hepatitis were retrospectively reviewed ("Fatal Coxsackievirus B Infection in Early Infancy Characterized by Fulminant Hepatitis," Journal of Infection, November 1998;37(3):270-273).
