Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors are important in angiogenesis in solid tumors to support growth beyond a minimal size. VEGF specifically acts on endothelial cells.
Irene O.L. Ng and colleagues studied the expression of VEGF and its receptor flt-1 in 50 cases of resected hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) ("Differential Higher Expression of VEGF-Receptor FLT-1 But Not VEGF Is Present in Hepatocellular Carcinoma," Hepatology, 1998;28(No.4, Pt.2):164A).
