Taiwan Experience Shows Universal Immunization is Best

Universal infant immunization has been more effective than selective vaccination in reducing overall hepatitis B carriage in Taiwan.

In 1984, a hepatitis B mass immunization program was launched in the country, beginning with newborns of hepatitis B carrier mothers. Two years later the program was expanded to include all newborns.

In this study, Hsu-Mei Hsu and colleagues from Taiwan's Hepatitis Research Center compared children who were born one year before the program began with children born during the selective vaccination phase and the universal vaccination phase of the program.
