High HAV Levels Seen in Low Income Chilean Children

A survey of hepatitis A antibody prevalence in Chilean school children found a high infection rate among low income students.

As sanitary conditions of a population improve, hepatitis A virus infection occurs at higher ages, thus decreasing the prevalence of antibodies against the virus.

In this survey, S. Riedemann and colleagues assessed the prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis A virus in school age children living in Valdivia, Chile ("Prevalence of Antibodies Against Hepatitis A In Chilean School Children," Rev Med Chil, 1998;126(10):1161-164).
