1997 Strawberry Outbreak Involved Six States

A widely reported 1997 hepatitis A outbreak has been definitely linked to frozen strawberries grown in Mexico and processed in California for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In all, 213 cases of hepatitis A were reported in Michigan and 29 cases in Maine. A newly published investigation of the outbreak from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found potentially-related hepatitis A cases in four other states as well.
