"Screening of Tumor Markers after Liver Transplantation Because of Hepatocellular Carcinoma."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 18th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Transplantation, held May 15-19, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois, "It has often been discussed whether the screening of serum tumor markers is useful to discover early tumor recurrence. We studied the relevance of tumor markers in clinical estimation of patients after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) because of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In our clinic, from September 1998 to April 1998, 1,000 OLTs were performed in 909 patients. In 102 cases, HCC was diagnosed histologically in the explanted liver. All patients had liver cirrhosis.
