Breastfeeding Not a Significant Risk for Hepatitis C Transmission

Breastfeeding does not appreciably increase the risk of transmitting hepatitis C (HCV) from mother to newborn, according to a new committee opinion issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

The document reflects recent guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since the risk of transmission is so small and the benefits of breastfeeding so great, women with HCV should feel able to breastfeed their infants.

Although the transmission of HCV through breastmilk has not been clearly documented, past studies indicate that the infection rate is 4 percent in both breastfed and bottle-fed infants....
