Genetic Relatedness Critical to Hepatitis A Outbreak Investigations

Determining the genetic relatedness of hepatitis A virus in epidemiological studies is critical to investigating outbreaks, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreaks are on the rise and CDC investigators are charged with determining the source of these outbreaks.

In this study, O.V. Nainan and CDC colleagues determined the genetic and epidemiologic relatedness of HAV isolates for all cases of hepatitis A that occurred in the six counties participating in the Sentinel Counties Study of Viral Hepatitis during 1996 and 1997.
