HGV Is Typed Using Polymerase Chain Reaction

by Salynn Boyles, Senior Editor -- Researchers from Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases have developed a genotyping system for hepatitis G virus using polymerase chain reaction.

Researcher Hideo Naito and colleagues presented their findings at the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, held November 5-9, 1999, in Dallas, Texas.

Based on phylogenetic analysis of the 5-UTR of hepatitis G virus (HGV) strains obtained from around the world, it has been found that HGV has genetic heterogeneity corresponding to the three major genotypes, type 1 through type 4.
