Key Phase of Human Immune Response Seen

The first detailed pictures of key immune system cells locked onto fragments of a foreign substance provide new clues about how the immune system identifies enemy threats and may even lead to a novel way of vaccinating people against diseases to which they are genetically susceptible, scientists say.

The report was published in the December 3, 1999, issue of Science by researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts.

The three-dimensional images, obtained by a process known as X-ray crystallography, show that the cells' docking equipment - or "receptors" - bind to the protein fragments in a manner not previously recognized. ...
