Cytokine Immunosuppression May Arrest Disease Progression

Progression of autoimmune hepatitis to liver cirrhosis in children may be influenced by the levels of circulating cytokines, according to researchers in England.

"Transforming growth factor-(beta) (TGF-(beta)) is a multifunctional cytokine with potent fibrogenic and immunoregulatory effects. TGF-(beta)₁ , (Th3-related cytokine), in particular, has been incriminated in the development of liver cirrhosis," said M. J. Hussain and colleagues.
