Genotype Affects Hepatitis C Viral Load in Patients with HIV

A study conducted in New York indicates that CCR5Delta32 affects the hepatitis C virus (HCV) viral load in patients also infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

M.H. Kaplan and colleagues of the North Shore University Hospital, New York, selected 71 patients infected with both HCV and HIV for their study. Study participants were of both sexes and various ethnic backgrounds. A majority (n=64) had acquired HIV through intravenous drug use, the scientists said.

Researchers screened patients with HIV for the HCV antibody using ELISA. They subsequently screened HCV antibody positive patients for hepatitis C viral DNA using the Amplicor HCV...
