TT Virus

Virus Seen in Italian Blood Donors

TT virus has been found in Italian blood donors with both high and low levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

"A novel non-enveloped DNA virus, called TT virus (TTV), has been reported to be associated with post-transfusion hepatitis of unknown etiology," wrote G. Pisani and colleagues, reporting in the journal Haematologica.

Pisani et al. studied the blood samples of 595 Italian blood donors - some with high, some with low levels of ALT. Serum samples were amplified and sequenced using standard analytical methods.

"The prevalence of TTV in blood donors was 5% ± 1.9% (25 out of 500) with a 95% confidence limit,"...
