Treatment Approved for Inoperable Heptacellular Carcinoma

MDS Nordion, a radioisotope technology company, received authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market TheraSphere, a non-surgical outpatient therapy that uses microscopic glass beads to deliver radiation therapy to treat inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a liver cancer.

This form of liver cancer is one of the most common tumors in the world, affecting up to 10% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia (J Oncol Manag, Jan-Feb 2000, p26).
