Diabetes Risk Associated with Hepatitis C Infection and Alcoholic Liver Disease

Patients with end-stage liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C infection or alcoholic liver disease are at increased risk for developing diabetes, according to Mayo Clinic researchers.

They also reported that liver transplantation outcome and survival was not affected by being diabetic.

N.N. Zein and colleagues had a three-pronged goal for their study:

  • determine the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in end-stage liver cirrhosis patients whose disease was the result of either HCV or cholestatic liver disease,

  • determine if viral and/or immunogenetic factors make the patient more susceptible to diabetes,
