Infants Receiving Hepatitis A Passive Immunity from Mothers Fall Short on Protection

Scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported research findings showing that infants who have the presence of passively transferred maternal anti-hepatitis A virus (PMA) when they receive vaccinations for hepatitis A virus (HAV) will eventually tend to have a lower immune status against this disease.

"This effect is an important consideration for communities with a high incidence rate of hepatitis A," Anthony Fiore, a scientist in the Hepatitis Branch of the CDC said at the 10th International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease, held during April 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia.
