Investigators at Toshiba General Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, described the genotypic characteristics of this new variant, called VAT96.
"Hepatitis C virus, a single-stranded RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae, has a wide range of genetic heterogeneity: 6-11 genotypes (or six clades) have been known and each genotype comprises multiple subtypes," said E.I. Samokhvalov and associates.
