Liver Target Needed for Effective Antiviral Response

New evidence from a study conducted by researchers at the University of Ulm in Germany finds that the microenvironment of the liver needs to be primed in order to be more effectively targeted by hepatitis B virus (HBV) antiviral agents.

According to R. Schirmbeck and associates in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at Ulm, hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) expression in the liver plays a major role in T1 and T2 immune responses. Hepatitis B virus vaccines prime either of these responses, via the cellular or humoral immunity pathways.
