According to R. Schirmbeck and associates in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at Ulm, hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) expression in the liver plays a major role in T1 and T2 immune responses. Hepatitis B virus vaccines prime either of these responses, via the cellular or humoral immunity pathways.
