Genetics a Factor in Susceptibility

A Mayo Clinic study has shown that genetic coding plays a significant role in susceptibility to acquiring autoimmune hepatitis, according to a report published in Immunological Reviews.

In this study, conducted by A.J. Czaja and associates at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, researchers analyzed the principal HLA alleles associated with disease in patients from Britain, North America, Japan, Argentina, and Mexico ("Genetic susceptibilities for immune expression and liver cell injury in autoimmune hepatitis," Immunol Rev, 2000;174:250-259).
