Poor Safety Practices in Pakistan Prompt Government Regulation of Blood Transfusion

Results of a study indicating blood banking practices in Karachi, Pakistan, were below World Health Organization standards prompted the country's government to pass legislation regulating transfusion safety.

Legislation had been proposed before, but wasn't passed, said S. Luby and colleagues at Aga Khan University and other institutions in Karachi.

Of 37 randomly selected blood banks (of 87 in Karachi), 24 agreed to participate in the study.
