S.J. Wei and other researchers at the Hong Kong Polytechnical University initially isolated this strain from a patient in Guangzhou, South China, who was also infected with the G-9 strain of HEV ("93G, a novel sporadic strain of hepatitis E virus in South China isolated by cell culture," J Med Virol, 2000;61(3):311-318).
The new strain, called 93G, was cultured with A549 cells and analyzed using a variety of laboratory methods.
