Blood Leukocytes Provide Clue to Genotypic Nature of Hepatitis Infection

New findings from a study conducted at the Nigata University School of Medicine in Japan reveal that peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) hold the possibility of predicting the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with hepatitis related liver diseases.

Researchers examined genetic instability as characterized by loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and replication error (RER) by looking at tissue and PBL from patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Sample types included: hepatocellular carcinomas, surrounding non-tumorous liver tissues (SL), and non-cancerous liver tissue (NC), as referenced by PBL.
