Hepatitis C Rate in Hospitalized Veterans Affairs Patients High

The rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients hospitalized at US Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities may be higher than previously believed, scientists at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia report.

G.E. Austin and colleagues conducted a study in which they assessed HCV seropositivity in patients who were admitted to the VA hospital in a one-year period between 1993 and 1994. These patients were admitted via regular admission, through the surgical service, or by way of the gastrointestinal service.
